Definition

We define ‘sustainability’ as: 'meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.' And we know how important it is to being a successful business.

  • It ties to our long-term purpose.
  • It links to the demands of our customers and partners.
  • Companies that focus on sustainability are inherently lower risk.
  • We think it’s the right thing to do.

Sustainable Development Goals

We support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – delivering against nine of the 17 UN SDGs.

3. Good health and wellbeing

Our systems provide a clean energy alternative to the diesel generator. The move away from diesel
is essential to good health; in London for example, 14.5% of the most harmful emissions such as PM2.5
are sourced from stationary diesel generators on construction sites.

6. Clean water and sanitation

Our systems create water, and nitrogen as by-products, ready for use in other applications.

7. Affordable and clean energy

All of our systems are off-grid and zero-emission at the point of use, directly supporting the
decarbonisation of a number of global industries.

8. Decent work and economic growth

We employ about 100 highly skilled people with diverse range of experience.  Through our supply contracts, we also support high-value employment across the world.

9. Industry, innovation and fuel structure

Our systems are supporting the decarbonisation of five key sectors across the globe: mobility, construction, maritime, rail and data centres.

11. Sustainable cities and communities

Our partnership with Extreme E's inaugural championship has shown that our systems are capable of being deployed in remote, inhospitable environments to provide reliable off-grid power, reducing the current reliance on the diesel generator.

12. Responsible consumption and production

The use of hydrogen as a fuel is recognised as a central part of international decarbonisation efforts, with the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies reporting that ‘it can replace hydrocarbons in aviation, shipping, rail and heavy road transport’. Our systems are part of this energy transition to net zero.

13. Climate action

The deployment of both the L Series and S Series fuel cell systems across a large number of industries will support a reduction in CO2 emissions, contributing to the global efforts to reach net zero by 2050.

17. Partnerships for the goals

We have forged a number of international partnerships to accelerate the deployment of our zero emission fuel cell systems, as well as instituting a number of supply chain agreements to deliver them.

Our commitments

We have set goals and commitments and report progress on these within our annual report.

Environmental

  • Development of zero emission systems at point of use
  • Ability of systems to use multiple sources of fuel, including ammonia, to accelerate decarbonation
  • Product design and lifecycle management
  • Energy management of operations
  • Supporting the decarbonisation of several key industries
  • Materials sourcing and efficiency, linked to effective supply chain and procurement management

Social

  • Embedding effective health & safety practices in system build and use
  • Embedding effective health and safety culture and practices for all employees
  • Clear diversity and inclusion practices
  • Employee health and well-being initiatives
  • Commitment to help the communities we live in

Governance

  • Strong board over sight
  • Supply chain and procurement management
  • Effective decision making is embedded throughout the business
  • Driving change through effective KPIs

Our policies

We have a range of policies:

Proud members

Hydrogen Council Logo

AFC Energy is a proud supporting member of the Hydrogen Council and has spent years working closely with them. Our shared vision for a hydrogen future propels us forward in developing an industry that can help solve the world’s decarbonisation challenge.

Hydrogen Europe Logo

We are also proud members of Hydrogen Europe and together we are advancing carbon neutrality by accelerating the European hydrogen industry.
